#CharactersHell - Week 3: The Long Wait

Even if the watchful eye doesn't always slide over there, the pits of #CharactersHell never stop burning! Especially with the devilish co-hosting of @LadyofMind!

And in theme with the hell, one of the reasons we had to skip a week were the storms that kinda sorta made yours truly lose his step a bit, and end up having to miss a post... hopefully that won't happen anymore.

But! With that being said, let's delve into #CharactersHell, shall we?

COPYRIGHT HELL

We start this week's showcase of #CharactersHell with author A.S. McGowan, who brings us in a world where it seems that cocky rich people got away with their trademarking! What a horrible place to live! Katrine 5.0, her character, shows us some of the problems her world faces now...

The ominous Trademark Commission is hot on her tail though....

UNIONIZED HELL

As it seems, some characters had enough of their personal hells, and they decided to put up a union and start a strike!

In a heated discussion about their authors, some of the characters became fed up, and a certain villainous woman from a certain cyber-fantasy book, proposed to union to sort their grievances! Does her heinous ways know no bounds??

An idea that seemed to take on as bourbon kept being poured, enjoyed even  by ancient, supernatural beings. After all, it's not a good strike without bourbon.

And tactics are getting discussed!

GRATEFUL DEVILS

We finish tonight's showcase dedicating some of our thoughts to our fathers - the authors' and the characters' both. If it wasn't for them, a lot of us wouldn't be around, and a lot of characters wouldn't exist so... Happy Father's Day people!

And with that, we conclude this week's showcase! And remember, go follow the devilish co-host LadyOfMind to keep visiting our #CharactersHell !

Stay tuned for more!

#CharactersTell Side Character Week - Interview with Thompson Kross

We start up another week in this first month of summer with a new interview! As always, the third week is dedicated to Side Characters, and for tonight we have quite the intriguing guest. I have to admit, I didn't have the pleasure to speak with a full-bloodied knight yet, and this was a pleasant first!

Tonight's guest is Thompson Kross, a Knight of the Kingdom of Erdoria and Lord of Karkoss, who's sworn to protect Princess Amarette - who seems to have put him in a bit of a problem, despite being a lovely woman.

Quite the intense gaze too!

He comes from Charlotte Ducharme's fantasy novel "The Last Dragon Rider" - Charlotte is a lovely woman who seems to have a very interesting, fantastical world to give us access to through her writing!

You can find her on Twitter following this link (where you should totally follow her!) https://twitter.com/Charleywriting

She also has a blog where she covers a number of aspects of writing - not only technical, but emotional as well, as for example some suggestions to get over self-doubt. You can check it out following this link! https://charleywritesblog.wordpress.com/

But let's get to know Thompson, shall we?

------

And here we are at the third week of June! Damn, the time seems to fly during the summer… but that ain’t stopping us! We’re back to the Side Characters as per usual, and tonight we have another interesting guest - would you please introduce yourself, your book and your author to our audience?

Alright, hello I am Thompson Kross, Lord of Karkross and I suppose a side character of The Last Dragon Rider, although last time I checked knights were often the main heroes… But I guess the hero is the beautiful Marvelle, who is a Dragon Rider so it is fitting. My author is Charlotte Ducharme.

Oh my, hello there! By the way you’re describing yourself and your world, I dare say we’re venturing into some unusual territory here - can you please tell us a bit more about the world you live in?

I have been told my world is different than yours. I come from a Kingdom called Erdoria that split apart in rebellion from our mother Kingdom, Khelan, centuries ago. We follow King Rohar and I serve his daughter, Princess Amarette, as her sworn knight and guard. It is not the only Kingdom though, there are many others, my ancestors from one called Eskar, but I have never left my Kingdom before.

The life of a knight seems pretty interesting there. How did you end up in that position? Is that something you always strived on? Or was this something you wouldn’t have expected?

I was actually born into the position as a Lord which gave me access to combat training. Through that I learned that my love was the sword, and I wanted to become the best knight that Erdoria had ever seen. I swore my vow to become a knight also to give my sister the proper title of Lady of Karkross, giving up my own birthright. She was far more suited for the role than me. But I suppose I always have wanted to be a knight.

I’m glad you found your life’s calling then. Is it all you expected it to be? Or are there some sides of it that you discovered you might not agree with? Sometimes we idealize or think about a position so much we can’t see its drawbacks after all…

It is far more complicated than I initially thought, especially when it comes to vows and honor. Sometimes it can be difficult to decide what is the right thing to do, what is the honorable thing to do, and which path I should follow… I love what I do, I love protecting the Princess, but such questions can keep me up at night.

Have you ever found yourself disobeying or ‘forgetting’ your vows for something you found morally more righteous? For example turning a blind eye as a starving kid ‘borrows’ some bread, or something along those lines.

… Sometimes it can be hard to decide on what I should do in those situations. When one starts to pick and choose which rules to obey and which to break then what is the point of such rules anyway? I am only human however… Some rules are too strict, and in some cases it is higher justice to not allow a unjust punishment to take place… that is all I will say on the subject though, as to not dishonor my family.

Completely understandable, indeed. I imagine honor is one of the most important things for a knight. Let’s change the subject a bit - tell us about your protegee. You say you protect Princess Amarette, right? What sort of person is she?

Princess Amarette is… she is the jewel of our Kingdom. She is patient, and kind, although quiet. Personally she has always treated me with respect and she is someone that I would be glad to give my life for.

I’m definitely glad to hear that...it does sound like there’s something more underneath that response, but I won’t be prying too much. Is there anyone you really can’t stand, instead?

Her uncle, Prince Tirius. I would never say it to his face, but there is something about the man that bothers me, let alone that he hates me. He calls me a “vapid nobleman” I’ve heard. I don’t quite care enough to give him a response though.

Some people really don’t even deserve the time of day to respond to them. Tell us about the story - how did you get involved into it?

What happened was that the Princess was set to be married to Prince Corrad of our mother Kingdom, Khelan. Although she “disappeared”, most thinking she was kidnapped. I went with the Lord of the Valley of the Dragons Marc Lavelle to go and look for her in the Draconic Forest, only to find that the Princess was in his castle with his sister, they had run away with the help of another girl and were in hiding to escape the marriage… I had taken vows to protect the Princess, which is how they got me looped into their foolish plans.

Wow. That does sound like quite the complicated situations to be in. But… vows aside, do you agree with her? Do you think she’d be happier with someone else than with Prince Corrad?

It is not for me to say. My Eskarian culture puts different emphasis on different matters. We find it important to let a lady choose who she wants to marry. Things are not the same in Erdoria. If the rumors are true and Prince Corrad is as dangerous as some say, then I do not think that she should be forced to marry him. But… I am not the King, and so it is not my decision to make. All I can say is that I would not let my own sister marry him.

I think that definitely says a lot… since we’re speaking about love, by the way. I don’t know if you’re aware, but we’re currently in Pride month. How does your world fare in that respect? Is there acceptance for different kinds of relationships?

As with most things, it does depend on the culture. I have heard in the culture of the Islands they are alright with it, my friend Tario says that his family accepts it fine with his brother. In Eskar where my culture is rooted it is not something we speak about often, although it isn’t shunned as far as I know. In Erdoria it seems to be much the same way, no one truly speaks of it, although I do not see such relationships often.

I understand completely. And I can definitely imagine how, in a culture where succession to power seems to be coming through bloodlines, things might be a bit more complicated as well. Are you aware of any instances when that happened? We swear we won’t tell you told.

Not in our Kingdom, although there is another Kingdom called Ilnya with a famous tale of two Lords who ruled together. It was said that their love was strong. One of the Lords fathered a bastard and the two named that child their successor. So it is not unheard of. But as you said it would be very complicated. Such matters are already complicated. But that Kingdom seemed to make it work without issue, if the story was a true one.

That’s very nice to hear, that they managed to make it work! And what about you? Are you interested in someone? And...have you ever had interest for someone of your own gender?

I have never had true interest in my own gender as I have with women, although there are many fine looking men around me. But no, at the moment the most beautiful person I can see is Marvelle Lavelle. My heart is hers if she wishes.

My my~ And by someone who takes vows and their word as seriously as you, that might make for quite the intriguing story! Anyway… unfortunately we’re getting out of time for tonight - is there anything you wish to say to our audience? Anything at all!

Hm… Well I suppose all I would say to them is to enjoy their lives. Life is meant to be lived and we were created to enjoy the world we live in. Perhaps that was too deep and you were looking for something more common. I’m not sure, I am not used to being interviewed!

Who knows, perhaps this will become more common in the future~ But that was a wonderful message. Thank you so much for coming tonight! It was a pleasure having you!

Thank you for giving me the time to speak! You are a wonderful interviewer, this was pleasant.

------

And that does it for this week's blog interview! I have to say, talking with him was quite the interesting experience, and it's always nice to see someone who takes values like honor and duty so seriously.
As always, a reminder that YOU can have YOUR characters interviewed on this blog too! Just send me a message on Twitter! You can find my profile on the sidebar, or follow this link: https://twitter.com/m_arbanassi
Thank you all for coming around! Come back next week to meet a new Background Character!
Toodles~

#CharactersTell Antagonist Week - Interview with Mathis Celsius

The summer brought with it storms, and storms brought with them a bit of a technical problem that made this post late... But I don't let pesky things like simple forces of nature stop me from putting out an interview!

Tonight's guest is Mathis Celsius - he is a bit of an hedonistic magician, working the clubs of Las Vegas and who made quite the name for himself - and along with that accumulated the money to pursue his goals.

He comes from Avrin Kelly's story "Feud". Avrin is a lovely author that you can find on Twitter through this link. Along with that, she runs the "Wicked Shorts" blog and an oddcast where she reads her stories with quite the lovely southern voice!

You can find "Feud" on Amazon through this link!
Along with that, there's Petit Demon, a short story that you can find here, and she's working on Menagerie, all stories you can see snippets of Mathis in!

But! Let's get to know Mathis, shall we?

------

And here we are! With the heat rising, we’re getting to know the people that tend to put our main characters on the hot coals… the antagonists! And to do that, we’ve got our guest for tonight: would you please introduce yourself, your book and your author for us?

My name is Mathis Celsius, but you can call me Matt. I was in a book called “Feud” by Avrin Kelly; if you can even call it a book. It’s like 12 pages long… but I guess we can’t all be winners, right?

Well, 12 pages is still quite something! And the shorter the work, the more likely you’ll be featured in more~ But! Tell us a bit about you. Where are you from? What do you do for a living?

I’m from Vegas. I’m a professional magician too. I’m pretty famous. People are stupid, they’ll pay $20 to watch anything they think might be supernatural… They have no idea that my “routine” is, in fact, quite real.

Ohh, from the city of sin, then! Tell us a bit about your routine on stage. Is there something you perform that is dearest to your heart? Do you have a theme, or a gimmick?

My ‘theme’ is money. My gimmick is shock value. I'm good at illusions, and it freaks people out. Most people don’t expect to see their dead relatives on stage when they go see a show in Vegas, but at my shows, they might.

So you deal with the spirit world? How did you get started into the realm of the supernatural? How did you figure out what sort of things you can do?

Nope. I don’t really deal with the spirit world. I just fuck with people. I got put on this road by my father. You’d think he would have been horrible, to sire a guy like me, but he wasn’t. He was a good guy, and a Magician, like yours truly. We Magicians ‘borrow’ magic from other supernatural beings, because we don’t have our own. We are just human. But, my father, he died indebted to a Warlock. (A pretty powerful one). So guess who had to pick up the slack? You don’t skip out on your bill when a Warlock is involved. Even death won’t get you off the hook…

Is this what brought you to be like this? You seem to be quite self-aware that your route isn’t particularly good, to introduce your father in such a way. Is the anger for being forced to pay that bill what fuels your contempt?

I just fucking hate Warlocks. They’re self righteous. They think they’re better than everyone else. If I had a nickel for everytime I outsmarted that half-wit, Thierry, I’d be even richer than I am now. You see, Warlocks are the fundamental problem with our world. If they had someone to police them, this rock wouldn’t suck so hard, and the supernatural community wouldn’t be so… fucked.

From the way you put it, I suppose you’re not the only person who feels like this. Do you have a lot of allies? Has an insurgence against the warlocks ever happened?

Not yet. They have too many people on their side. They have the Council of Scholars, those guys are immune to magic; so they're hard to get to. Then you have the Warlocks themselves, they’re nearly impossible to hurt or even talk to (for that matter). The Quorum, those who control the Witches of this world, all they care about are themselves… It’s basically every magic person for themselves. Its bullshit.

I can imagine that. So, is your acting like you’re a bad guy actually just a front? You seem to have quite the strong political views, and you seem to have a contempt for the treatment of the supernatural world from these people. Are you trying to make it right?

I’m simply going to punish the man who ruined my father. Yet another Warlock… And I promise, I’m not acting. I’ve done some horrible things to get to where I am now. It’s taken a lot of work and patience. And if Thierry thinks he’s going to stop me, he’s out of his mind. Period.

I see. Let’s try to talk about something a bit more lighthearted for a bit, shall we? How’s the summer in Vegas? What’s your favorite season?

Winter. But I don’t spend my winters in Vegas. A lot of times I go to Galway, Ireland. Magic is stronger there for some reason. That’s probably why the Scholars have their base of operations there. I have a hidey hole in Galway. The scenery is beautiful. Whenever I go out there, it’s the only time I ever feel like my old self again. The only time I can ever be truly alone too, which is hard to do when you're famous.

Ireland *is* a beautiful country indeed. So, if you like winters so much, how do you cope with summers? I imagine Vegas can get pretty blazing hot. Do you have any summer-specific pastimes?

Does titty-watching at my private pool count?

Hard to say it doesn’t, to be perfectly honest. Ornithology is a great hobby.

There are some rare, dirty birds in Vegas…

Heh. I can imagine that. Speaking of which - we are in a certain month. Have you ever experimented?

Absolutely. I enjoy the company of anyone with half a brain.

That must make for some interesting pool parties… Tell us. You seem to be one who enjoys the finer things in life as much as some calm and relaxing time… What is the wildest sort of party you ever were part in or organized?

I’d have to say conjuring succubi would be at the top of my list. I was just studying, practicing magic as one does, and it worked. This succubus had the ability to copy herself at will (as any sex, mind you), and believe me you… she did. That was a helluva day.

Damn! I can imagine that… But! I’m afraid we’re getting out of time for tonight’s interview - is there anything you’d like to tell to our audience? You have free reign.

I would say this: the rebellion is coming, so don’t get too comfortable. I’ve only just begun to strike. Thanks for having me Manuel, you're a pretty cool guy.

The pleasure was mine! Can’t wait to see more of you and the other stories in this world! Thank for your time, and have a nice day!

You too, brah.
*winks* Call me.
------

Uhhhf...Quite the heated ending there. I do have to admit I am intrigued, not to mention the thoughts of a private pool and ornithology along with good company and succubi does sound quite intriguing.
But! That is it for tonight's interview! As always, YOU can have YOUR characters interviewed on this blog! Just send me a message on Twitter and we'll sort you out!
Another reminder that, for all your characters gripes, the bar down in #CharactersHell, co-hosted by the lovely @Ladyofmind, is always open!
Hope to see you guys around!

A hot day in #CharactersHell - Week 1

It's the first week of #CharactersHell, and we already got some very interesting recounts from them!

Longest Hell

We open this week of highlights with Z.D. Lawson character, having quite the long stint with some heavy problems.
This enough would be quite the awful thing to be met with, and would bring every character to drink... what makes this post deserve a spot on these highlights is the fact that there are apparently 9 books they'll need to go through, as you can see from this post!

An applause for the dedication of the author to put the lovelies in #CharactersHell!

Character-ization Hell

Getting props for being the first to descend in #CharactersHell, we have Elisia Green, whose character seems to have some problems with her author's ideas for her and the handling of secrets! I wonder which ones~

All you need is love... even in Hell

And closing our highlights for #CharactersHell is Amina Leeds, whose character Sarin seems to have a bit of an overcrowding problem when it comes to her sentimental life...

I hope this love won't be toxic!

...

...Yes, yes, I know I belong in hell for that joke. But hey, I'm one of the people running it, so it's all good! Speaking of which, big thanks to LadyofMind , our lovely co-host!

Anyway! With this we close our first week of highlights for #CharactersHell ! Stay tuned to see more in the future!

#CharactersTell Main Characters Week - Interview with Jacob Scar

Hello there ladies, gents, and everyone in between as well!
Summer is here - maybe not officially, but with the heat, the schools about to close, people preparing to take time off work to go get a vacation, it's hard to argue it is, innit? And with June starting, we're back with #CharactersTell interviews, as always exploring another Main Character!

Going by this ref picture, he's quite
the force to have at your side.

Tonight's guest is Jacob Scar - a rugged man who, along with Kestrel, goes on adventures on the high seas as a blade for hire in historical Nassau. A man with a good heart, a practical mind and strong morals, who will tell us a bit more about his life.

He can totally rock a hat better than me, too.
He's one of the two main characters from Andy Roberts' work in progress series "Gentlemen of Fortune", where we will follow Jacob and his adventuring partner Kestrel as they work for various crews in the unforgiving freedom of the pirating life. Andy is a pulp-writer, and you can find him on Twitter using this link. He has a blog as well, where he speaks about all sorts of things - from videogames, to Han shooting first, to writing and personal life, and you can find it here.

But let's get to know him, shall we?

------

And we start a new month! The heat is rising, the sun shines bright, the windows get open and the seaside gets more and more alluring...but that doesn’t stop us from getting more questions and interviews! We get back to Main Characters Week, and to do so we open the month with our guest! Would you please introduce yourself, your book and your author please?

Good day. The name’s Jacob King, but everyone calls me ‘Scar’. Me and my friend Kestrel are from “Gentlemen of Fortune”, a series of high seas adventures being drafted by Andrew Roberts.

Oh dear! High seas adventures! Definitely the right thing to get into this time of the year! Can you tell us a bit more about your world? Is it like ours? Is it completely different?

My world is the Caribbean, and I believe Charles II ruled England when I first met Kestrel. So, it is like your world.

Interesting! So, your story takes place in the past. That was quite the adventurous age for seafaring in that period… Tell us, what side are you on? What sort of ship do you sail in?

Kestrel and me, we’re on our own side. Which tends to be whichever ship we’re serving on, or whoever’s paying us. Or whatever quixotic crusade Kestrel’s sworn himself to. Usually when there’s a woman involved.

Then you do tend to be more like people for hire for the various crews? I guess, with the title of the series, that might be the case… Is there a lot of competition in that field?

Well, often. Port Royal has plenty of people willing to hawk anything we don’t make use of ourselves. But when prizes are thin, competition gets fierce. But if you mean within a single vessel, anybody who can wield a blade is good enough for most captains.

I can imagine that...but isn’t it weird to you know, have to sail off with a crew that doesn’t know you yet? I can imagine a lot of times there might be trust issues. Have you two ever been in a ship where people just didn’t really take to you?

Kestrel has a silver tongue, and I’m large enough to keep most people from getting hostile. But we’ve had our fair share of captains who really don’t take a liking to us for one reason or another.

Well, at the very least that’s helpful. But...how did you get into this sort of life? Was it something you always thought would happen and looked for, or is it something unexpected?

I met Kestrel in prison and we broke out together. We’ve been companions ever since then. I was with a Maroon community before that, helping slaves escape the plantations on Antigua. Kestrel thought the pirate’s life provided better freedom.

A Maroon community? I have to admit, I don’t think I’m particularly familiar with it. Can you tell us a bit more about it?

The colonial powers have been profiting from the blood of slaves for a long time. But there are communes on every island who resist, providing aid to those who manage to flee.

That’s a very valorous goal. And speaking of that, let’s talk about morals. How do you conciliate that with a pirating life? I mean, especially as men of fortune, I doubt all of your endeavours on the various ships aligned with your personal moralities...have you ever found yourself in a situation where you wouldn’t want to have anything to do with?

There are butchers, yes. But most pirates are merely sailors who want more independence or slaves looking for freedom. When all necessities have to be stolen, it can drive desperate men to do desperate things. But I’ve never killed anybody who didn’t deserve it or was trying to kill me first. And I refuse to stand idly by when a crewmate wants to execute somebody who isn’t fighting back.

I see. It’s a good thing you did. But, we spoke all this time only about your job… Can you tell us a bit more about you? Your life, your interests and hobbies outside of your career?

Well, there’s not much other than drinking and gambling, and there’s plenty of that in Port Royal. I’m not really tied down to any place, although I’ve been with plenty of ladies.

Do you ever think of stopping? You know, settling down, and so on. Do you have a specific goal you’re pursuing before doing that?

There isn’t really a place I can settle down where I’d feel at ease.

Understandably so, I can imagine a life like this might make it difficult to envision something different. There are a lot of legends about the sea back in the day...hidden treasures, monsters, certain personalities - without going too much into it if you don’t feel like it, but have you ever encountered some of those?

I hear the stories all the time of ghost captains and sea monsters and buried treasure. Most of it is the product of rum-fueled thought and false hope. But some of these stories exist to serve a purpose, and I would like to know those purposes.

I hope you’ll find out your answers out there! But, I’m afraid we’re getting out of time for tonight - is there anything you’d like to say to our audience? You can say whatever you want!

Piracy is not a life for the faint of heart. It’s hard work, and there isn’t always a reward. But it does allow more freedom than naval service, and you do get a say in most matters.

It definitely sounds like it. I’m glad you found your freedom like this, and I’m sure we can’t wait to read more about yours and Kestrel’s life in “Gentlemen of Fortune”! Thank you so much for your time tonight!

Thank you. It was great to be here!

------

And this concludes our interview for today!
A reminder that a new #hashtag has been launched today - #CharactersHell ! You can find how it works in this blog post!
As always, you can have your characters interviewed in this blog! Just send me a message on Twitter to sort you out in one of the slots!
See you next time!

Introducing #CharactersHell!

As writers, one of the things we love the most is putting our characters through the ringer.
Let's be honest - there is some joy to be found in seeing our lovelies struggle. There's something delightful in seeing them come out of a situation already hoping to patch themselves up, get a cup of chocolate, take it easy, and see their reaction when some other nasty thing happens straight afterwards, before they can even catch a breath.

And it's not only life-threatening situations, or the main character alone either:
Side characters might be tired of having to deal with Main characters antics, main characters might not like how the side characters seem to ignore them, antagonists are usually pretty pissed at the whole ensamble, background characters sometimes end up losing their job, livelyhood, loved ones, even their life to a conflict they're not even part of! This is bloody hell innit!?
And all of them - all - at some point hate you, the writer. And sometimes you hate them too, because they just don't want to behave.

So...here's #CharactersHell!

This is a freeform #game (as in, it's not structured in daily or weekly chats) that all of you can use whenever you want if you feel like your lovelies need to vent some stress - towards the author, their life, and other characters, anything goes!

Now, since I'm already hosting #CharactersTell, I needed someone who could help me with this new idea - and luckily for me, I've got the lovely Nicole, who on twitter goes by Ladyofmind, to help me with this endeavor! She is the author of the Red Letter series, and you can find the interview with Tweety, her main character, in last month's blog post right here!

She's also the one who made this lovely graphic for #CharactersHell, so welcome her in the fold!

So! Let's get this show started, shall we? Let your characters rant about the life you laid in front of them in the comforting ambience of a nice and relaxing bar, with the bartenders listening to their every rant and gripe! Let them loose! If they find some kindred soul at the counter, they might even talk to each other, or plot revenge against their torturers (mainly, you).
And who knows - some might even end up into this blog!

#CharactersTell Main Character Week - Interview with Elle Deschampes

Wow...well, September has been a bit of an eventful month in RL for me, but we're luckily back to our regular schedule - and not only th...
